# Thursday Morning Go-Around: Synthesis

**TNN 2026 Cohort Retreat — Closing Day**
**Opening question:** "Sleeping on it, what was one thing from the past two days you couldn't stop thinking about?"

---

## The through-line

Almost everyone arrived at the same tension from a different door: define and move versus sit in the ambiguity.

- Speaker 2 named "talking our way to definition" and how much is still mushy.
- Speaker 6 echoed it as shared purpose not yet settled.
- Speaker 7 framed it as pacing a long journey toward a grand vision.
- Speaker 13 closed it cleanly with the board-chair line: community without mission is self-absorption, mission without community is exhaustion, and the work is threading that needle.

That tension is the pivot. The room talked itself to the edge of the identity and agency questions on its own.

## Identity: who are we

The room asked this directly.

- "Congregationally adjacent or congregationally centered" (Sp2)
- "Shared purpose as an organization" (Sp6)
- "How does this network keep our focus on the neighbor" (Sp9)

Worth saying back to them: you already posed the question we're going to sit with this morning.

## Agency: what's ours to do, and at what pace

- Speaker 8 carried this furthest: people need margin to participate and agency to co-create as experts in their own space, and institutions are meant to resource the work, not run it.
- Speaker 7 on pacing the long journey.
- Speaker 5 turned it inward: how does this network tangibly improve my own work.
- Speaker 12 on valuing the bridgers, having something real for them, naming the role out loud.

## What's at stake: the structural thread

- Wealth accumulation tracking with departure from neighborhoods, and the privatization of neighborhood goods and services (Sp11)
- Faith communities' undervalued prophetic strength to name and resist that (Sp12)
- "The relationship between the ground and the white paper" (Sp11) is a good phrase to hold up

## The register to close on

- Play is healthy and part of thriving (Sp7)
- Sore cheeks from laughter (Sp1)
- Longing and crucial juncture, the sense that years out they'll remember this week with gratitude (Sp10)

## A bridge you could use

> From very different starting points, you kept landing on two questions. Who are we together, and what's actually ours to do. Those are the identity and agency questions we're holding today. The goal this morning isn't to resolve them. It's to get clearer on how we carry them home.
